Good Things Come In Small Packages ¡ Sometimes A 125cc four stroke trail bike from Korea, doesn¡¯t sound too good but as far as I¡¯m concerned, any trail bike is good fun so I was looking forward to giving it a good thrashing all the same. What we have here is a bike designed on a budget and that is something that must not be forgotten when reading this test report. there are plenty of really good trail bikes on the market that cost a fortune and also plenty of average trail bikes that are average priced but we don¡¯t see many low cost trail bikes available and we very rarely read tests about them, they¡¯re just not that exciting ¡ well, I¡¯m not so sure about that . Korean motorcycle manufacturers have not been known for their innovative designs, classic styling or high performance but there are a number of different companies from the land of Kimchi that are really beginning to produce some very good scooters and small ¡®cc¡¯ bikes. Hyosung is one such company and to prove a point, their range includes nothing higher than a 250cc road bike/cruiser although their main product is scooters. Ho Wun motorcycles are importing these bikes and have found the scooters to be particularly popular as you can see by the number of them on the streets. This particular model, the RX125, is a bit of a strange category, not a scooter but it is a small capacity bike ideal for commuting, it¡¯s not a work bike and has no storage area or panniers but it wouldn¡¯t take much to add a ¡®Top Box¡¯ to make it more practical. It¡¯s not been designed as an all-out Off Road bike either but it¡¯s long travel suspension and high ground clearance make it quite adept at handling the rough. So just what is it? A lot of fun for very little money, that¡¯s what. We took the bike to one of our usual locations with strict instructions from ¡®Ho Wun¡¯ to ¡°do anything you like with it¡±. As it turned out, those instructions were exactly what this bike needed. If we had done the usual test, a couple of hours test ride with some wheelie photos, this bike would have turned out like any other budget road bike, good value for money with reasonable performance. But the fact that we were specifically told to do ¡°anything we liked¡± was the key to the enjoyment that I experienced and I¡¯ll tell you about that. The bike started first time with one press of the electric starter, quite a modern feature considering that even Honda have only just started using electric starters on their big trail bikes, there is a kick starter as well. It doesn¡¯t sound very impressive but it¡¯s only a 125cc engine so I shouldn¡¯t have expected it to roar into life. Into first gear and I¡¯m off up the road to warm it up, as soon I let the clutch out and opened the throttle I needed to change into second gear, then quickly third and so on, obviously not designed for top speed but it should be good for 100kmh which is all that is needed to keep your license free of penalty points. 5 minutes later and I¡¯m confident to start playing around with this bike, time for a bit of fun, first things first, wheelies. This would be the perfect bike for those of you who want to learn to wheelie but don¡¯t get the wrong idea, it¡¯s not an easy bike to wheelie. It would teach you a) how to learn to find the all important ¡°Balance Point¡± as the bike is not powerful enough to simply open the throttle and ride along on the back wheel and b) if ¡ sorry, when, you fall off there is no beautiful fairing to scratch or expensive parts to break so you can practice and practice until your arse hurts. Next item to test, the brakes, that means it¡¯s Stoppie time. There is a disk brake on the front with a two piston caliper, ample stopping power to bring the back wheel into the air as high as your head, certainly up to my expectations. The rear brake is a drum type that I expected to be next to useless but it was also more than adequate and enough to get the bike completely sideways when required. Although, as I said earlier, this bike is not really intended to be a pure on/off-road bike but I gave it a good thrash through rough ground, over hills, up and down steps, sliding through gravel and we even found a picnic bench to ride over. I must say that the bike performed very well, certainly better that anticipated and due to it¡¯s light weight and responsive suspension, it could be thrown around easier than most on/off-road bikes which are normally handicapped by their weight. I did feel that the bike was a little under-powered but there are advantages to having less power, the main one being that you learn to control the bike quicker as you don¡¯t have to fight the power. Everyone is used to having bikes with power than you can only exploit some of the time but the fact is, even seasoned riders with years of experience can learn a lot from a low powered bike. And any experienced rider would soon start looking new for ways to enjoy this bike as it is not about going fast, it¡¯s about having fun. That¡¯s exactly what I did throughout this particular test as you can see by all of the photos. There is just one word to summarize the Hyosung RX125, FUN. Actually that should be two words, CHEAP FUN. Enjoy. The RX125 is available from the dealer, Ho Wun Motorcycle Centre. They can be contacted on 27084499.
